    Thank you so much for making this video. It’s pleasing to watch, how this camera is still related today’s world. By the way I just start experimenting mine with Fuji GFX, so far going good. Is anyone done any work so far ? Last year tried some 120 films on it and work great with film back. Only issue I’m having with the lens, it seems need to be service.

    I still have a Nikon F2 and a Nikkomat (lenses are all interchangeable on a bayonet fitting) with standard lenses, a big heavy telephoto lense and and fish eye lense. I also have an ancient Practicka, with a large selection of lenses, that I take on the beach etc. where I won't take my Nikons.

    Why do fixed lens rangefinders always have the shutter on the lens? Besides being cumbersome, it is extremely prone to breaking. I have owned several rangefinders like this from different brands and they have all broken. An SLR is much more reliable in my experience.

    Hello, I have one of these cameras and watching your video I opened mine and had access to the film winding system, however, in my case the small horizontal bar does not remain in the "unlocked" position. When I use the screwdriver and move it, it moves smoothly, but if I release it, it returns to the "locked" position. Do you know of any other procedure to keep the small bar horizontal so that it does not block the film winder?

    I bought my OM 1 in 1979. It still works, but the battry for the lightmeter is no longer made. I did attempt a conversion using a diode, but made a complete hash of it. So I just use a hand meter.

    On mine everything works 100% as long as you let the advance lever go so it can spring back to it's original position. If you do it gently the camera will jam! I will give it a clean and oil under the bottom plate, should help things return a bit smoother. Thankyou for the video!

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869 9 днів тому

      It is possible to get in without a degree if you can verify you have 3 years of experience in a trade or skill. There are many foreigners in Japan working in resorts or restaurants, these jobs don't require degrees. You can also enroll at a Japanese language school, which will allow you to get a student visa. With this visa you can get a work permit which will allow you to work part time. In time you can find a better job with an employer who will sponsor, not all of them require degrees so long as you have some kind of skill they can use.

    My timer stuck, what should i do? It wont go foward on the film, and wont shutter

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869 9 днів тому

      The self timer can stick for two reasons. It can stick if the shutter blades are stuck. If you remove the front or rear lens and add a drop or two of solvent to the shutter blades, that may cause the shutter to cycle, and unstick the self timer. If the self timer itself is stuck, you can add a few drops of solvent to the lever and let it run down into the mechanism. This sometimes doesn't work, if that is the case, try pushing the lever. This will often unlock the timer and shutter, the timer may break, but at least you can then use the shutter.

  • @JamieByrne1977
    @JamieByrne1977 14 днів тому

    A big issue with these and comparable cameras is that they are not regarded as pro and people tend to obsess over this which is largely a mixture of fomo and flexing. In one way though, it's good because it keeps the price down.

    It's nice to see these two compared. I still have my MX I bought in 1977. I'd challenge the assertion that these were designed, considered or even called 'Pro' at the time. I certainly don't remember these ever marketed as such. I was a young photographer in the 1970's and in 35mm the Nikon F/F2 and Canon F1 were considered a 'pro' model. The OM1 was a first SLR design from Olympus targeting anyone while the MX was considered as a simpler ME/Spotmatic but not a 'Pro' models.

    • @November-Romeo
      @November-Romeo 14 днів тому

      I too have the Pentax MX which I bought around 1980. The Pentax LX was the pro model, but I thought the MX was at least a semi pro model. Unlike the more amateur models like the ME/ME Super etc, the MX had pro features/accessories such as interchangeable focusing screens (of which I have two; a plain screen and one with grid lines. This was additional to the split circle screen). It had interchangeable backs like the data back (which I know the ME had available as well), but the MX also had a bulk film back allowing you to shoot up to 250 exposures. There was also both a winder and motor drive (for up to 5 fps) and a battery grip as an extra power source. From memory, the ME only had a winder capable of shooting up to two frames per second. I never had the OM1 and always wanted one, but I believe it too had very similar features and accessories which made it more than just an amateur focused camera (that the OM10/20 etc was).

    I became aware of the lens shortcomings on the Canon several decades ago which is why the 17 is not in my collection. In the meantime I have five of the Electro 35 but not the GX. Electro 35 is not bad. My favorite for using a rangefinder, I am more an SLR guy, is the Minolta HiMatic E. I used one to shoot four years of B&W photos for my grad school yearbook and it never let me down. Great size for surreptitious photography.

  • @arnewoodman
    @arnewoodman 15 днів тому

    I wish people were honest with advice about strengths and weaknesses and suitability. My father - proud owner of a Rolleiflex TLR - bought me as my first 'serious' camera a Russian Lubitel TLR. He didnt hold with fiddly new-fangled Japanese 35mm. He meant well but could only 'see' photography from his own narrow perspective. TLRs are good for certain subjects and styles. But TLRs inherent parallax error, left/right viewfinder flip, lack of D.o.F visibility etc kill off close-up, telephoto, moving action and eye level shooting. And only 12 exposures per film is expensive and cumbersome to reload. And you can't shoot slides (well only with an adapter and considerable waste of film). Its tough being 14 using a TLR when your friend has an Olympus Trip. Could have put me off photography for life. But I eventually bought a Zenit SLR (with my own money) and the world changed. Did he learn anything from this? not much. He gave my younger sister a Zorki 4K. Nice camera for a certain kind of enthusiast. But for a 12 year old's first camera? heavy, awkward to load, no point in interchangeable lens if you only have one. And don't even get me started on exposure meters! He had a Weston, but we had to use a little calculator card with tables for time of day, weather condition, light or shade, film speed, and read-off an EV value.
